Tracing the Past was founded in 2014 as a registered non-profit organization (in German: gemeinnütziger, eingetragener Verein, e.V.) in Berlin, Germany, by a like-minded group of Berliners consisting primarily of historians. Current contributors include archivists and information technology experts working in many facets of Holocaust history and provenance research.

Tracing the Past e.V. is registered with the District Court (German: Amtsgericht) of Berlin-Charlottenburg under document #VR 33494 B as a legally registered organization, with status confirmed as a non-profit entity with the German Tax Office under § 52, Section 2, Line 1 No. 10AO, Purpose: to promote the remembrance of the persecuted.
